HOW I THRIVE

ANGELA SANTOMERO, television producer

Encourage someone you don’t know well to tell you their story.

“My favorite way to connect is to dig deeper and connect more to find out everyone’s story. This has changed the way I view small talk—it’s to talk to fewer people in a deeper way. ”

An apology is one of the most powerful ways to resolve, or at least address, a conflict. Apologizing to someone when we’ve wronged them is essential to keeping the relationship intact, but it’s not always as simple as saying sorry. An effective apology is best done in person, Lauren Bloom, author of Art of the Apology: How, When, and Why to Give and Accept Apologies, told Thrive Global. But if a face-to-face conversation isn’t possible, a phone call or video chat are great alternatives. While we have the other person’s attention, Bloom suggests taking responsibility for the harm we caused (“I shouldn’t have done that”) and making amends as best as we can (“What can I do to fix it?”). It can also be helpful to express what we value about the other person, why they are a friend we want to keep. Then, one of the most vital ingredients to the apology isn’t about the apology at all, it’s about your behavior moving forward. When we hear it, it sounds rather obvious, but it’s a step that many of us skip: Don’t do the upsetting thing again. If it’s a behavior that feels baked into your personality, you can intentionally take a Microstep to help you improve. For example, people who are chronically late can set plans on their calendar for fifteen to twenty minutes earlier than they need to, essentially tricking themselves into being on time.
